First-time travelers to Italy/China
A Footpath in Umbria: Learning, Loving & Laughing in Italy is a fun way to get a feel for Italy before going for the first time. Welcome to Here: A Reluctant Traveler Goes to China offers a philosophy of travel that allows anxious travelers to step back, to take in a reduced amount of stimuli.
Armchair Travelers
For those who, for one reason or another, cannot travel to Italy or China, these travel memoirs allow readers to experience the countries vicariously.
Reluctant Travelers
Both memoirs are examples of how one person who suffered from anxiety and panic attacks learned to travel at her own pace and within her stated goals.
Living Abroad on a Shoestring
Living in Italy for a year while maintaining a house in the States is an expensive undertaking. However, A Footpath in Umbria opens a discussion on how to cut costs and how doing so may lead to a more authentic experience.

Welcome to Here Rochester Post: A Footpath in Umbria
Nancy's favorite guidebooks are written by Rick Steves. He also has videos containing travel tips. Your local library probably lends them for free. Written with verve and vividness, this travelogue provides a fine description of a senior American couple’s experiences in Umbria near Tuscany in Italy during a lengthy stay. The first-person writing by the wife is both personal and practical, and enables readers to easily envision everyday immersion in Italian customs and culture. The book covers their preparations, and expectations, for a prolonged visit including the practicalities of finding reasonably priced accommodations. It also covers their changing perceptions of life in general and their own relationship. In Italy, the book offers engaging accounts of making new friends, shopping, dining, use of cell phones and other appliances, dental care, lessons in Italian, transportation by bus and train, etc. Many Italian words, with English translations, grace the pages.
Nancy's Literary Fiction
Three of Nancy's fiction stories have been published in The MacGuffin, The Defiant Scribe, and Blood & Bourbon. |
